WMC Praises Tax Cuts in State Budget

100 New Tax Auditors Pose Threat to Businesses, Taxpayers
MADISON – Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce — Wisconsin’s Chamber — Thursday praised the Joint Finance Committee for passing a state budget that includes tax cuts for individuals and businesses, but cautioned that more tax relief is needed in the future.
WMC President/CEO Kurt R. Bauer said:
“The Joint Finance Committee today took a good first step to cut taxes, and that’s to be commended. But, we have a long way to go. Wisconsin continues to be in the infamous top 10 of highest taxed states, which is proof that we need much more aggressive tax cutting. Federalizing the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) will provide modest relief to Wisconsin taxpayers. However, Wisconsin continues to be an outlier as one of only six states that still has an AMT. This change will marginally help efforts to keep and recruit top talent to our state. Overall, we are gravely concerned that the budget includes the hiring of 100 new tax auditors. Hiring dozens of additional tax collectors is not a recipe for attracting investment, and it sends the wrong signal about Wisconsin’s tax friendliness.”
