Stand at least two hours a day for better health

Office workers should stand for at least two hours a day – and gradually increase that to four hours – to combat the ill effects of lengthy sitting, according to research from the University Centre Shrewsbury and the University of Chester.
Based on studies that connect prolonged sitting to increased risk of serious illness and early death, international experts offered the following guidance:
Use adjustable sit-stand desks to decrease sitting.
Avoid long periods of static standing, which might be as detrimental as lengthy sitting. Change your posture and incorporate light walking to lessen possible musculoskeletal discomfort. Additionally, employers should caution workers about the risks of lengthy sitting and encourage healthy behavior, researchers said. They also could determine how workers take breaks and use desks and technology that employ more standing.
The study was published online June 1 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
