WMC Statement on Attempted Veto Override

MADISON – The Wisconsin State Assembly voted 59-37 on Tuesday to override Gov. Tony Evers’ veto of Assembly Bill 336 – which would have ended the $300 weekly unemployment bonus claimants get from the federal government. Unfortunately, the vote fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to overturn the governor’s action on the bill.

Following the vote, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) Executive Vice President of Government Relations Scott Manley released the following statement:

“WMC and our members thank Assembly Republicans who voted in favor of overriding Gov. Evers’ veto of Assembly Bill 336. Wisconsin businesses across our state are facing a crisis-level workforce shortage, and we appreciate the legislature’s efforts to tackle this issue.

“Ending these overly generous unemployment benefits would have helped more people return to the workforce and kick-start our economic recovery. Unfortunately, this means more Main Street businesses will have to close a few days a week due to staffing shortages, while some may shutter permanently because they cannot find enough help.

“It is regrettable that not a single Democrat was willing to do the one thing that would have had an immediate impact on our state’s workforce shortage. As a result, many Wisconsin businesses will continue to struggle with what may very well become an extinction-level problem.”
