WMC Praises Congressmen Kind and Gallagher’s Bipartisan Effort to Restore Congressional Oversight on Trade

MADISON – Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) President & CEO Kurt Bauer released the below statement of support for a new bill introduced by Congressmen Ron Kind and Mike Gallagher that restores Congressional oversight on trade authority.

Under the new bill, Congress would have a 60-day period to approve any trade proposal that is made in the interest of national security. It would apply to all future Section 232 actions and those that have been taken in the last four years.

Bauer’s statement is below:

“As a manufacturing and agricultural state, trade is critical to the Wisconsin economy. Thirty-seven percent of WMC members say the U.S. imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, as well as the retaliatory tariffs, have had a negative effect on their business, according to our most recent economic survey.

“As I have stated in the past, WMC understands and appreciates President Trump’s goal to create truly free, fair and reciprocal trade between the U.S. and our global trading partners. We also acknowledge that some nations have failed to live up to that goal.

“But, WMC also believes that Congress should play a role in trade policy. Congressmen Kind and Gallagher’s bill restores the important oversight responsibility of the legislative branch of government, and we applaud their bipartisan solution.”
