Two Committees OK Needed Reforms Today

MADISON – The state’s chamber of commerce and largest business association commended lawmakers in both houses of the Legislature for passing iron mining reform legislation through the committee process today.  Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) urged lawmakers to take swift action to pass the legislation and send it to Governor Walker’s desk.

“Passage of the bill through committees in both houses of the Legislature on the same day sends a signal that the Legislature and Governor are committed to passing comprehensive iron mining reform, and are serious about creating jobs,” said Scott Manley, WMC vice president of Government Relations.

“The Legislature should take the next step and act swiftly to enact iron mining reforms to create thousands of family-supporting jobs throughout our state,” Manley added.

On Wednesday, the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economy and Mining and the Senate Committee on Workforce Development, Forestry, Mining, and Revenue both approved iron mining reforms.

Governor Scott Walker called for passage of the legislation in his state-of-the-state address.

Manley commended Assembly Majority Leader Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford), Rep. Mark Honadel (R-South Milwaukee), Rep. Mary Williams (R-Medford), Senator Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) and Senator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) for their hard work on the iron mining reforms.

“These dedicated lawmakers have set our state on a path of job creation – of growth, hope and opportunity,” Manley said.  “They are pioneers for job creation, and we appreciate their hard work on behalf of the citizens of our state.”
