WMC Endorses Wisconsin Taxpayer Protection Amendment
Business Group Urges Statewide Vote to Let the People Decide

Madison Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce Thursday endorsed a proposal to amend the state constitution to cap taxes, and require a referendum to exceed the caps.

“Wisconsin has the fifth highest taxes in America and we will only lower our tax burden with reasonable caps on taxes and fees,” said James S. Haney, president of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. The tax amendment is the top long-term legislative priority for Wisconsin’s business community, Haney added.

The Legislative leadership in both houses today unveiled the proposal.

“The Legislature is united on the need to do this,” Haney said, “because they understand that if we get taxes under control our communities will have better jobs and brighter futures.”

Under the Wisconsin Constitution, the proposal must pass both houses of the Legislature in two consecutive sessions. The proposal then must be approved by voters in a statewide election – a very high hurdle.

“It’s time to let the people decide this issue,” Haney said. “The people know our taxes are high. They know that taxes have been a political football for generations. This issue deserves to go to the people to let them have their say.”

The non-partisan Tax Foundation in Washington, D.C. reports that Wisconsin has the fifth highest state and local tax burden based on ability to pay.

“Our state is at a turning point,” Haney said. “Our high taxes are driving our young people to other states to find jobs. Our seniors are retiring away from their families. And, in the long run, high taxes slow job creation.

“We really need to have a tax cap in our state constitution to protect our economy, create jobs and help Wisconsin grow,” Haney said.
